In this little volume, Cebu-based Latinist Marco Biondi provides an original translation of Giacomo Dalla Pietà’s poem Christus apud Seras, first published in Latin by the Pontifical Academy of Latin in their flagship journal Latinitas (series nova), vol. 6 (2018). The poem revolves around an interaction between two French Jesuit missionaries and the Kangxi Emperor (1654—1722). This volume also comes with a preface, authored by the translator, which contextualizes the poem in the missionary efforts made by Jesuit missionaries throughout the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries up to the infamous “Chinese rites” controversy which spelled the end of friendly relations between the Qing dynasty and the missionary orders.
